A little business before fun:)

Our accountant, Brenda, is super stoked about sending your $1,000 MyPianoProject scholarship... but she is also our accountant and likes to remind us that the IRS requires Well-Loved Piano to file some paperwork…bleh :( Please fill out the above IRS W9 form so we can issue the check.

Do I need to pay taxes on this money?
Most of the time the answer is ‘No’ but in most cases you do have to report the income. It all depends on how you decide to spend the money, how much earned income you have during the year, and what tax situation you are in at the end of the year. Talk to your tax advisor if you have questions.

What if this is for a child, dependent, or someone who doesn’t file taxes?
If this is the only income a person earns all year then they probably fall under the IRS minimum earned income thresholds, but we still have to file our paperwork to the IRS and you should reference rules in IRS Publication 929. Don’t worry, if your eyes roll back trying to read this document, ours did too. You got this!

What if I don’t want to file the paperwork?
This sadly isn’t an option for us because it jeopardizes our ability to fund the scholarship. We wish this was different :( Dealing with tax implications is about as fun as … nothing. It isn’t fun and that is why we are asking you the fill out the above form.

Can a parent receive the scholarship on behalf of my child?
No, this usually causes more complications for you and our staff. We can only issue the scholarship to the individual who completed the project. We are sorry if this isn’t the best fit for you :(

Whew! You made it :)

Let’s get back to playing music! If you have other questions please ask your tax advisor.
We are not tax experts and don’t want to give you bad advice.
